Coral Gables' Dutch South African Village, designed by Marion Sims Wyeth, is patterned on the farmhouses of wealthy Dutch colonists who came to South Africa in the seventeenth century. The colonial era was ending as Coral Gables was being built, so perhaps the Dutch South African Village played into European nostalgias of the westernization of far off exotic lands, but who knows? It was pretty, and more climactically appropriate than Dutch architecture from the Netherlands itself.
