Genting Going For 'Not So Big' 3 Tower Complex Downtown

New, 9 comments

Genting, speaking for the first time in six months since being squashed in their attempt to legalize gambling in Florida so they could build a downtown Miami megacasino on the site of the Miami Herald Building, "remain[s] committed to Miami and [is] slowly moving forward with a plan that could be presented to the city later this year or early next." They had already lost interest in buying more prime land owned by Miami-Dade Public Schools.

The new plan will have two condo towers, a 500 room luxury hotel, and a small department store's worth of restaurants and stores (about 100,000 square feet). The 500 rooms are about one tenth of their original proposal for a 5000+ room resort designed by Arquitectonica, but - assuming those 500 rooms are in a third tower - it still sounds like a nice big meaty project for Miami. Maybe not as massive as original plans, but still maybe half the size Brickell CitiCentre. Large, but not grotesquely so.

That is unless they can legalize gambling in the next five years. Then bam! Big again!
