A mysterious fire over the weekend charred the interior of Fort Lauderdale's historic Gilliam House though without appearing to cause any structural damage. The decorative woodwork may be another story. The two-floor home, built for Gilliam, a lumber yard owner and prominent Republican Partier, in 1926 in the Florida Mission style, was saved from the wrecking ball in 1999, joining the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
