Fort Lauderdale city commissioners will consider today whether to historically designate Broward County's brutalist Main Library, despite it being only 30-ish years old. (the cutoff usually being 50 years) Marcel Breuer and Associates, led by architect Robert Gatje, won a bid to design the library in 1984, softening the raw concrete exterior with a layer of Florida keystone and installing a glass wall on the library's north side and multiple terraces of greenery to blur where the inside ends and the outdoors begin. Nonetheless, the building is not beloved by all. [Sun Sentinel; Previous]
