Gables Trolleygate Twist

Coral Gables is considering whether to extend its trolley line to Village West, a historically black neighborhood, after the U.S. Department of Transportation concluded plans to relocate a maintenance garage for the trolley there without actually providing the neighbors with any trolley service, violated the Civil Rights Act. Earlier this week, Gables Commissioner Vince Lago proposed extending the trolley's service area into the MacFarlane Homestead Historic District, just east of U.S. 1, which Coral Gables founder George Merrick carved out in the 1920s for the Bahamian laborers who helped build his dream city.
