Last week, FIU had a formal ribbon cutting for its new Stempel Complex, designed by Perkins+Will, which actually opened in time for the beginning of the school year and, according to a press release, houses Miami's latest hurricane researching place: the Extreme Events Institute. Miami really doesn't get enough credit for being the hurricane research capital of the world, ya know? The building even looks like a hurricane. Or a tornado. Or something...
According to a press release: "The institute will study and provide data to the United States government, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and other international meteorological organizations, providing unparalleled insight on the effect of extreme natural events on people, society, and the economy."
