Checking Out All the Art at Art Basel, the Main Event

Today's the big day, the first official day of Art Basel Miami Beach, with collectors thronging the fair today, and general admission beginning tomorrow evening. (Get up to speed with our previous Art Basel coverage, here) And there are a lot of collectors. Even though they delayed the Vernissage, which is when the 'lesser VIP' (a nauseating phrase in itself, because of the cast-like idea that it perpetrates) get in, it's a packed house up in this hizzy. Curbed was at the main event this morning with all the rich swells, and checked out some of the art, many photos of which we have in the following gallery. Hanging stuff seems to be a big thing this year, along with thematic rooms. Oh, and there are NetJets pilots on strike outside, which is just kind of a reminder of how surreal (and wonderful, and fun, and elitist, etc. etc.) this whole billionaire art bash really is. Let the Basel begin!
