A century after its debut, the Lyric Theater in Overtown is opening its doors again for the first time in decades after extensive renovations. The theater, inspired by the Opera House of Paris, was once a center of black culture in segregated South Florida but has stood vacant since the 1970s (apart from an appearance in Whitney Houston's music video for "Try It On My Own" in 2002). The theater will have its second premier with an Apollo-style amateur night called Lyric Live Friday, Feb. 7. [Miami Herald; Previous]
