Without Expanded Stadium, Sony Open Threatens To Close Up Shop And Move

New, 2 comments

Facing opposition from the Matheson family—the old Miami family that donated land that would become Crandon Park to the county in the first place—the majordomo of the Sony Open tennis tournament has threatened to close up shop and decamp from Miami if they don't get a larger stadium post haste. Plans have existed to expand the stadium for a while. The Mathesons have opposed them for a while, using their position on the Crandon Park Amendment Committee to watch over the land that used to be their private estate and pineapple (or was it coconuts?) plantation. Either way, the Open won't be leaving right away. Their lease of the Crandon Park Tennis Center doesn't expire until 2023.
