And Now An Ode To the Royal Poinciana, The Flame Tree

One of South Florida's best imports is undoubtedly the Royal Poinciana, the Flame Tree, which just had its brief but absolutely brilliant flowering season. At home in tropical or subtropical climates, the delonix regia is endemic to Madagascar, but came to South Florida in the early part of the 20th century when developers were looking for exotic plants to landscape their newfound paradise. And in the 'random historical factoid' category, Henry Flagler's great Royal Poinciana Hotel in Palm Beach was named after the tree, although the hotel was ironically closed every year by the flowering season.
