City Approves Plan to Build over Lincoln Road Church Courtyard

New, 5 comments

The Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board voted today to affirm it's earlier decision to allow the construction of a retail store (rumored to be an Old Navy or Abercrombie & Fitch) on the site of the historic Miami Beach Community Church's courtyard. Although the church itself, built by Carl and Jane Fisher and designed by Walter DeGarmo, is of indisputable historic value, at issue is the historic nature of the courtyard which, although it's always been empty community land, was never really finished and is pretty blah. Although the Church and developer David Edelstein technically still have the official A-Ok, the Miami Design Preservation League promises to appeal again, so until that appeal has been resolved (and maybe not even then) it's kind of a moot point.
