The grand opening of Downtown Miami's proud new Whole Foods Market was a somewhat major news item earlier this week, as Downtown's thousands of condo dwellers finally had a 'good' grocery store in the center of the urban core. More unusually, it opened while the tower above it, the Monarc at Met 3 rental apartment tower, was (and is) still very much under construction.
There are other examples in Miami of structures being erected above already-occupied space, like Mary Brickell Village's residential tower, but the complexity of required to pull this off, with obstacles like a tight site bounded by highly-used roads, elevated rail tracks, limited staging areas, and an operational grocery store beneath is pretty impressive.
