Miami Beach Wants to Raise West Ave by 1.5 to 2 Feet

New, 10 comments

It's about damn time we get serious about sea level rise in South Florida. Miami Beach thinks so. Sure, it seems like road work is always happening around here, but now they want to raise West Avenue by 1.5 to 2 feet, along with existing plans to upgrade underground infrastructure and stormwater improvements, according to the Miami Herald. And it would happen very soon.

The first phase, which will include sections from fifth to eighth streets and Lincoln Road to 17th Street, should begin by February and last until August, with the section in between done later in a second phase. Depending on the property, transitions from street height to surrounding height would include higher sidewalks, steps down to the sidewalk, and/or extra drainage to protect surrounding properties from runoff.
