Developer Fifteen Group has proposed a new 34-story, 352 unit residential tower for the site at 1836 Biscayne Boulevard, a site already occupied by an historic property, the stately neoclassical First Church of Christ Scientist. The tower, designed by ADD Inc. includes a massive parking garage topped by an amenity deck, and is described as 'floating' above the church, when in reality huge pilons slice into the domed interior of the former sanctuary that continue up to the building, leaving an claustrophobic gap between the church and the parking levels. The church would be converted to a retail space, or potentially a grocery store, which might require ripping out its ground-level (the sanctuary is elevated, accessed by a broad flight of steps) to create a driveway.
