Curbed Cup Round 1: (2) Downtown Miami vs. (15) Sunny Isles

The Curbed Cup, our annual award for the South Florida neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 areas vying for the trophy of all trophies. This week we'll have two matchups per day, with the results and full tournament bracket reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins.

Downtown Miami is the heart of South Florida and in 2015 it beats with vigor. No longer is the area just Bayside, American Airlines Arena and everything else. From the plans like SkyRise Miami and Miami World Center to future luxury condo developments such as One Thousand Museum, there's just as much buzz in downtown as top-seeded Brickell as both core Miami areas continue to go under the knife, with restaurants and residents flocking. Perez Art Museum has arrived next to a much-needed Museum Park, with Frost Museum of Science still under construction. Still needed: Dependable mass transit to and from South Beach (and other areas).

Sunny Isles Beach is a booming haven for luxury residential development, with the likes of Mansions/Estates at Acqualina, ice rink and F1 simulator included, Jade Signature, Ritz-Carlton Residences, and Porsche Design Tower. Silly money is flowing in "Little Moscow."
