The Curbed Cup, our annual award for the South Florida neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 areas vying for the trophy of all trophies. This week we'll have two matchups per day, with the results and full tournament bracket reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins.

The Design District is sizzling, with the four-block pocket neighboring Midtown Miami morphing into something new by the day. Besides already being a high-end shopping mecca and Miami Art Week destination, the food scene remains potent, with Michael's Genuine Food and Drink among one of Miami's elite brunch destinations and MC Kitchen's roasted pear and cheese fiocchi sending your taste buds into a tailspin. Palm Court and City View Garage completed this year and the area will also be rising from a residential standpoint with several happenings on deck.

Surfside/North Beach has seen some interesting luxury residential projects sprout in the last couple of years -- Oceanfront Townhomes, Fendi Chateau Residences, and the sleek Eighty Seven Park, to name a few, with Surf Club Four Seasons topping off this year. It's a highly walkable area and in some ways visually similar to South Beach but with a MUCH quieter beachfront. Lou's Beer Garden is a gem, as is Burgers and Shakes, which offers some excellent, um, burgers and shakes. Sandbar Lounge is also a fun little dive bar with interesting people and actual sand beneath your toes.
