Light pollution is a very real thing. It may look like an alien presence is wafting over a distant horizon, and in a way it is. This was the view from the Overseas Highway on Christmas evening, December 25th last year, driving back to Miami from the Florida Keys. Except for the probably quite negligible difference that a few Christmas lights make, it's easy to imagine that this is just about as bright as Miami is for much of the rest of the year too.
