Andy Sweet's Photographs Captured the Beach-Ball Brashness of South Beach in the 1970s

New, 3 comments

Andrew John Sweet was a young photographer living and working in Miami Beach in the late 1970s and early 80s. A native son of Miami "Andy Sweet returned home to Miami Beach after receiving a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977, to photograph the old world Jewish culture that then distinguished South Beach," according to his biography. "His beach-ball hues perfectly described the vivid light and lively culture he explored and portrayed, a culture that many others found bleak and pedestrian." Sweet was murdered on October 16th 1982. A new foundation, the Andy Sweet Photo Legacy, is seeking to revive his legacy and publish a book of Sweet's work.
