New regulations put in place in Broward County directed at Uber, Lyft, and other ride-sharing services are causing Uber to take the first train out of Dodge, ahem, taxi out of Broward. The service is "Suspending operations in Broward County starting July 31" while continuing to function in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties, basically sandwiching a county's worth of Uber-free wasteland in the middle. The new rules would have required each Uber driver to obtain chauffeur registration, county background checks, and a special commercial car permit, requirements Uber has decided are unfeasible. "It is our hope that the Board of County Commissioners will revisit the issue and pass a sensible regulatory framework" says Uber, making their ultimate goal extremely clear.
