Are the ambitions of the MLS Miami partners too big to fit in the proposed Overtown soccer stadium site? The Miami Herald interviewed David Beckham partner Jorge Mas, who confirmed he has met with developers about other stadium sites.
Mas wants to create a “tech hub” near the stadium, a youth soccer academy, and entertainment that extends beyond the stadium itself. “I want to make it the most technologically advanced, futuristic stadium in the country,” he told the paper. “Obviously, you need more than nine acres for that. We’ve been exploring the surrounding area in terms of: What can we do to put this all together?”
Rumors of other sites include: the Bertram boat yard, land next to Marlins Park, and a 24-acre site in Doral that’s currently the home of Pepsi’s local operations.
But then again, Mas is also considering repositioning the current stadium plan by adding in affordable housing in the neighborhood.
“In Overtown, how can we assist with workforce housing?” Mas said. “There’s a whole housing component we are potentially looking to there. I’m looking at the housing component as a way to acquire additional land.”
