A pedestrian bridge under construction near Florida International University collapsed this afternoon, 7 News Miami reports, and the Florida Highway Patrol is already reporting several people have been killed in the accident. At least four people were injured.
The bridge collapsed around 1:45 p.m. at Southwest Eighth Street near 109th Avenue. Here’s an eye witness video from Twitter taken in the aftermath of the collapse.
A story in the Miami Herald over the weekend called the project an “instant” bridge, noting that it used an “innovative” rapid span installation. The $14.2 million bridge was installed across the roadway five days ago.
Florida Highway patrol is confirming 5 to 6 cars are crushed beneath the FIU bridge. Several fatalities, but no exact number given to media. Southwest 8th street has been shut down in both directions near the bridge.— Nadege C. Green (@NadegeGreen) March 15, 2018
