A pedestrian bridge under construction near Florida International University collapsed this afternoon, 7 News Miami reports, and the Florida Highway Patrol is already reporting several people have been killed in the accident. At least four people were injured.
The bridge collapsed around 1:45 p.m. at Southwest Eighth Street near 109th Avenue. Here’s an eye witness video from Twitter taken in the aftermath of the collapse.
A story in the Miami Herald over the weekend called the project an “instant” bridge, noting that it used an “innovative” rapid span installation. The $14.2 million bridge was installed across the roadway five days ago.
Florida Highway patrol is confirming 5 to 6 cars are crushed beneath the FIU bridge. Several fatalities, but no exact number given to media. Southwest 8th street has been shut down in both directions near the bridge.
