Miami-Dade police confirmed this morning that at least six people died in yesterday’s tragic bridge collapse near the campus of Florida International University. Ten others were injured and taken to the hospital, according to NBC Miami, and now the mission has turned from rescuing victims to recovery.
It’s not clear why the under-construction pedestrian bridge suddenly collapsed. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted overnight that an investigation as to why this happened is underway, saying: “The cables that suspend the #Miami bridge had loosened & the engineering firm ordered that they be tightened. They were being tightened when it collapsed today.”
