Updating The Curbed Miami Starchitecture Heatmap

View as Map

Here now, a much-needed update to the Curbed Miami Starchitecture Heatmap, a map of the latest and greatest in Miami's emerging crop of starchitect-designed buildings. This year we've focused the map on Dade County, dropped a few buildings, and added some new announcements including Rem Koolhaas' Park Grove, Richard Meier's Surf Club, and the retinue of designers working on the Faena District. Projects that are still pretty far into the future, with little info revealed, like the Related Group's One Brickell, have also been excluded. Finally, we've of course updated the statuses of all the buildings still on the list. Do check it out, after the jump.

Grove At Grand Bay

Construction of starchitect Bjarke Ingels' first South Florida commission, the two twisting towers of Grove at Grand Bay, is well under way. The towers twist to 'maximize views of the waterfront' and, you know, because it's f-ing cool.

Faena District

We've practically lost count of the number of buildings, and the big names designing them, at the Faena District Miami Beach, which is currently under construction. Lord Norman Foster's Faena House tower has just topped off, while Rem Koolhaas' Faena Bazaar and arts center, as well as his mechanical parking garage, are all currently underway. Baz Luhrmann is currently working on the Faena Saxony, while Thomas Heatherwick does another hotel on the property, the Versailles.

One Ocean

One Ocean, by starchitect Enrique Norten, who is the lucky recipient of many South Florida commissions, has swooping curves, and surprising but very beautiful architectural details. It's currently under construction.

321 Ocean

321 Ocean, by starchitect Enrique Norten, is just a few blocks up Ocean Drive by Norten's other building-to-be One Ocean, but the difference between the two is night and day. Whereas One Ocean is afflury with curves, 321 is just about as boxy as they get, a celebration of rectilinearity. 321 Ocean just topped off.

Collins Park Garage

The larger than life Zaha Hadid's Collins Park Garage, a block away from her apartment at the W, is swoopy, and very Zaha-ish. Being commissioned by the City of Miami Beach, construction firms clamored to meet the Feb. 5th deadline to submit bids. Construction should begin sooner or later.

Jade Signature

Only in Miami would starchitects scramble over each other to design an oceanfront condo tower in otherwise quite nauseatingly un-design savvy neighborhoods like Sunny Isles Beach. The upcoming Jade Signature is designed by starchitects Herzog & de Meuron, the firm that did the famous 1111 parking garage and the Perez Art Museum Miami. The building is currently under construction.

Design41

Design41, named by Curbed Readers in a contest held on Curbed Miami, will be yet another building by one of Miami's most prolific starchitects, Enrique Norten. This time. it adds a little height to the low scale Design District.

One Thousand Museum

Zaha Hadid's first skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere will be the towering and luxurious One Thousand Museum, a building described variously as "ready for a diaper change", "Gaudi meets bacteriophage", and "a space alien's butt plug." The building is expected to break ground in June.

National YoungArts Foundation Campus

Super-starchitect Frank Gehry is currently designing a new arts campus to be built around the historic Bacardi Building. The designs have yet to be revealed. However, Curbed hears from an architectural heavyweight around town that they are spectacular.

Perez Art Museum Miami

The recently completed Perez Art Museum Miami is the second Miami building by celebrated starchitecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Their first was the famous 1111 and their third will be a condo tower in Sunny Isles Beach called Jade Signature.

Frost Museum of Science

Designed by Grimshaw, the Frost Museum of Science will have a planetarium in a ball just like at the Natural History Museum in New York. However, unlike the Natural History Museum, it'll also have a ballroom under a glass bottomed shark tank. The museum is currently under construction.

Surf Club

Starchitect Richard Meier is expanding the historic Russell Pancoast-designed Surf Club with new condominiums in his signature modernist style and a Four Seasons Hotel.

Park Grove

Designed by Rem Koolhaas, Park Grove will be three luxury condo towers in the heart of Coconut Grove. Renderings have dribbled out here and there but the big reveal is coming soon when the sales center opens in the old Coconut Grove Bank Building.
